Which tags work?
NTAG213, NTAG215 and NTAG216 stickers, MIFARE Ultralight, DESFire and Plus cards, ICODE and other ISO 15693 labels, FeliCa, and ISO 7816 smart cards that answer the app. Tags you did not write work too, since TapPony reads the tag's own identity rather than something written on it.
Why won't my iPhone read my building badge?
Many older badges and fobs are MIFARE Classic, which iPhone cannot read at all. Android phones can. iPhone also ignores bank cards and smart cards that don't answer the app. If the scan sheet waits and times out, that is usually the reason.
Why is the UID different every time?
Some cards show a random ID on each read to protect their owner. Such a UID can't identify the card, and the result card says so. Use what's written on the tag, or write your own tag with a launch link.
Does the UID match my desktop reader?
TapPony sends the UID in one canonical byte order on both platforms. Readers that print it differently usually match
{uid_rev} (reversed) or {uid_dec} (as a decimal number).How do I set up a receiver?
Pick a preset (Home Assistant, Node-RED, n8n, ntfy, Discord, Slack, Google Sheets and more) or start blank, put in your URL, and tap Test in the editor. The docs list every variable and include a ready-made PHP receiver.
How does my server know a request is really from my phone?
Turn on signing in the profile. Each request then carries an HMAC-SHA256 signature over its timestamp and body. The docs have verification code for PHP, Python and Node.js.
Can I send to a server on my home network over plain HTTP?
Yes, for local addresses only, after you turn it on in that profile. Anything on the internet has to be HTTPS.
What happens when I scan with no signal?
With "Save and send later when offline" on, the scan waits on the phone and goes out in order once there is a connection, for up to 24 hours. Without it, the scan fails and shows a network error.
Can one tag go to different places?
Yes. Rules send tags to profiles by UID, chip, content or a name you gave the tag, and one rule can send to several profiles at once. A named tag can also have its own profile.
Can I start a scan without opening the app?
On iPhone, use the Control Center or Action button control, the widgets, or the Shortcuts actions. On Android, use the Quick Settings tile or a launcher shortcut. Tags you write with a launch link open TapPony by themselves.
Is it a card wallet or payment app?
No. TapPony reads tags and sends what it read to your server. It doesn't store, copy or pay with cards.
Is it open source?
Yes. The iPhone app is at github.com/norsehorse-dev/TapPony and the Android app at github.com/norsehorse-dev/TapPonyAndroid.
